AI interior design glossary visual — definitions and design terms
AI interior design
AI interior design is a category of software that uses generative artificial intelligence to redesign rooms from photos.
AI interior design tools take a photo of an existing room as input and produce realistic redesigns in different styles. Unlike traditional design software where a user manually places furniture, AI interior design generates the entire scene automatically while preserving the room's geometry, windows, and proportions.
Generative room design
Generative room design is the use of generative AI models to create photorealistic interior designs from a single input image.
The model identifies the structural elements of the room (walls, floor, windows, ceiling) and generates new furniture, finishes, lighting, and decor that fit the space. Most modern tools, including DecorAI, use diffusion-based models combined with depth estimation to keep the output physically consistent with the source room.
Virtual staging
Virtual staging is the practice of digitally adding furniture and decor to photos of empty or vacant rooms, typically for real estate listings.
Virtual staging replaces the cost and logistics of physical staging — moving furniture into a vacant home for marketing photos — with software-generated alternatives. AI-powered staging can produce multiple design variants (modern, traditional, scandinavian) for the same listing in minutes.
Style transfer
Style transfer is the technique of applying the visual style of one image (or a learned style) to another image while keeping its underlying structure.
In interior design, style transfer means taking your living room photo and rendering it in, say, Japandi or Bohemian — without changing the room's shape. Modern AI design tools don't use classical neural style transfer; they use conditional diffusion models that have learned what each style 'looks like' from millions of training images.
Photo-to-design AI
Photo-to-design AI is software that converts a single room photo into one or more redesigned variants using a generative model.
The user uploads a photo, optionally selects a style and room type, and receives a generated image showing the same room redesigned. DecorAI is an example of a photo-to-design AI app available on iOS, Android, and the web.
Before-and-after slider
A before-and-after slider is an interactive UI element that lets users drag a divider to reveal an original photo and its redesigned version side by side.
Before-and-after sliders make it easy to evaluate how much an AI design has changed a room. They are the primary way most AI interior design apps present results.
Room redesign
A room redesign is any visual reimagining of a room — historically by a designer, now also instantly by AI.
AI room redesign tools let homeowners and renters preview redesigns of their existing space in seconds without buying furniture or hiring a professional. The results are visualizations, not buildable plans.
Design style
A design style is a recognizable visual aesthetic with consistent rules about color, materials, furniture, and proportion.
DecorAI supports 30+ styles including Japandi, Scandinavian, Modern, Boho, Industrial, Minimalist, Mediterranean, Art Deco, Farmhouse, Coastal, Mid-Century Modern, Luxury, Rustic, Tropical, Vintage, and more. Each style is a distinct conditioning signal to the AI model.
Home staging
Home staging is the preparation of a residence for sale, including furniture, decor, and arrangement chosen to appeal to buyers.
Traditional home staging involves renting and placing real furniture; virtual home staging uses photos and AI to generate the same effect digitally for online listings. Both aim to increase perceived value and reduce time on market.
Real estate photography
Real estate photography is the photography of properties for sale or rent, typically optimized for online listings.
AI tools can enhance real estate photography by generating staged versions of empty rooms, brightening interiors, and producing style variants that match different buyer demographics.
Diffusion model
A diffusion model is a type of generative AI that creates images by iteratively denoising random noise into a coherent picture.
Most modern AI interior design tools — including DecorAI — are built on diffusion models. Conditioning the model on a source image (your room) and a style description (e.g., 'Scandinavian') is what enables photo-to-design output.
Conditioning image
A conditioning image is the input photo that constrains a generative model's output to preserve specific visual features.
When you upload your room photo to DecorAI, the photo acts as a conditioning image — it tells the model where the walls are, where the windows are, and roughly where furniture should sit, so the output looks like a redesign of your space rather than a random room.
Inpainting
Inpainting is a generative-AI technique where only a selected region of an image is regenerated while the rest stays untouched.
Inpainting is useful when you want to change one wall, one piece of furniture, or one section of a room without regenerating the whole scene. Some AI design tools expose this as a brush or selection tool.
Mood board
A mood board is a curated collage of images used to communicate a design direction.
Mood boards are common on Pinterest and in designer workflows. AI interior design tools serve a similar purpose, but applied to your actual room — making the visualization concrete instead of aspirational.
Render
A render is a generated image that depicts what a designed space could look like, as opposed to a real photograph.
Traditional 3D renders are produced from CAD models in software like SketchUp or Blender. AI renders are produced directly from a 2D photo using generative models — much faster but with less geometric precision.
Aspect ratio
Aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between width and height of an image (e.g., 16:9, 4:3, 1:1).
AI interior design tools typically preserve the aspect ratio of the input photo. Wide photos give better context for living rooms; vertical photos work well for narrow spaces and bathrooms.
Resolution
Resolution is the number of pixels in an image — higher resolution shows more detail.
Most consumer AI design tools output images at 1024–2048 pixels on the longest side, which is sufficient for screen viewing. Print-quality designs require either upscaling or specialized high-resolution models.
