How DecorAI's AI works

A non-marketing explanation of how a single room photo becomes a photorealistic redesign — what the AI changes, what it preserves, and why.

How AI interior design works — methodology diagram

DecorAI uses a fine-tuned diffusion model conditioned on your room photo to generate redesigns that match your actual space. Below is an honest walk-through of what happens between upload and result.

01

Photo upload and pre-processing

When you upload a photo, DecorAI first checks the image: orientation, resolution, and lighting. Underexposed or extreme-angle photos get a heads-up to upload a better one. Most modern smartphone photos work without any prep.

02

Room understanding

The system estimates room geometry from the 2D photo — where the walls meet the floor, where the ceiling is, where windows and doors are. This depth information becomes a 'conditioning signal' that constrains the redesign to your actual space.

03

Style and room-type selection

You pick a style (e.g., Scandinavian, Boho, Modern). DecorAI also auto-detects the room type — living room, bedroom, kitchen — to apply style-appropriate furniture and decor. The combined signal tells the model what to generate.

04

Diffusion generation

A diffusion model — the same family of models used in tools like Stable Diffusion and Midjourney, fine-tuned for interior design — generates the redesigned room. The room's structure (walls, windows, layout) stays close to your photo; furniture, finishes, lighting, and decor are regenerated.

05

Quality and consistency checks

Outputs that fail consistency checks — e.g., warped walls, missing windows, broken perspective — are filtered out before reaching you. You typically see one to several variants per generation.

06

Delivery

The final image is delivered to your device (iOS, Android, or Web) typically in under 10 seconds. You can download, share, or generate more variants in the same or different styles.

What changes

What the AI preserves vs. regenerates

The output looks like a redesign of your room because the AI explicitly preserves the room's bones while regenerating everything else.

Preserved

  • Room shape and proportions
  • Window placement and size
  • Door placement
  • Ceiling height (approximate)
  • Major architectural features (fireplaces, columns)

Regenerated

  • Furniture (sofas, beds, tables)
  • Wall color and finishes
  • Flooring
  • Lighting fixtures
  • Decorative elements (art, plants, rugs)
  • Window treatments (curtains, blinds)

Privacy and your photos

Photos uploaded to DecorAI are processed for design generation, not for training our models. We don't sell your photos, and we don't use them to retrain models without explicit consent.

Generated designs are stored in your account and accessible across iOS, Android, and Web. You can delete photos and designs at any time. See our privacy policy for full details.

See what it can't do

Honest limitations matter as much as honest mechanics. We document both.
